After the Art in Basel, Switzerland

The original Art Basel is being held this weekend in Switzerland.  The Art Fair kicked off on June 18th and will go until June 21st.  Art Basel is THE premiere art show bringing galleries, visitors, collectors, and artist together from all over the world to be inspired by all mediums of art.  With over 200 galleries represented, artwork ranges from the great masters to emerging artists.

While enjoying the art, sample some of the best cuisine in town.  We have picked three of our favorite restaurants near the fair that offer options beyond schnitzel!

Lily's Stomach Supply:
Great lunch spot with Pan-Asian cuisine.  There is a large patio outside to people watch and you can grab a quick, inexpensive bite prepared with the freshest of ingredients.  Our favorite dish is the Tom Kha Gai Soup with fresh shiitake mushrooms and a touch of lemongrass really brightens it up.

Zum Goldenen Fass
Is open late and serves an amazing Sauteed Cod in lobster bisque soup. If you want to experience authentic local food, this is the place. Additionally, they have an excellent wine selection and they are located in a charming ivy-covered building.

800 Degrees Steakhouse
Offers up some of the best steak east of New York City but they also have mouthwatering salads and desserts. We were blown away by the Caprese Salad, which included a bit if molecular gastronomy on the side, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil beads top of the salad and the flavors literally burst in the mouth.

Vitra Campus
Don't forget that along with being inspired by art and enjoying bites the VITRA Campus is not too far away and should not be missed.
Charles-Eames-Straße 2, 79576 Weil am Rhein, Germany

Herzog & de Meuron designed the Vitra Haus

Zaha Hadid designed Fire House

Frank Gehry designed Swiss Circle

If after you've taken in both art and architecture you are feeling exhausted and want to laze about, join the locals in their favorite summer pastime, floating down the Rhine River.  Many stores near the river sell waterproof float bags where you can store your clothes and a towel and use it to enjoy the cool water and beautiful city as you float on by.
